About Ralph Masengill

Ralph Masengill is one of the original "change agents" in the United States. Before the quality movement came into vogue in the late 70's, he and his associates were presenting seminars and papers to senior management across the nation pointing out that until financial institutions were willing to understand and submit to positive change, effective quality improvement and substantial profit enhancement were not possible. Image, public relations, advertising, and marketing in the end must be measured, and one of those measures should be based on profit to the shareholders. Masengill and his associates have always worked from the industry or business side of marketing. Masengill has also worked closely with numerous colleges and universities, helping them satisfy their special needs, and he is considered an expert at improving communication between the private "for-profit" sector and academia.

He is in the vanguard of professional thinking that believes every company has a personality and every company must be marketed based on that personality. There is no "magic formula" for marketing any company. Only a well-planned, individualized communications plan based on that company's goals and vision, its needs and objectives, and its personality will be successful. Anything less is smoke and mirrors, is not cost effective, and in most cases is detrimental to the company.

Masengill and his company design individualized communications and marketing plans that put senior management, and the company it runs, in a leadership position and keep them there. Masengill believes firmly that success is much like gravity; it only flows down from the top. Keep in mind that all communications and marketing plans must be measured and that one of the measuring sticks should always be enhanced profit.

Further, the individualized communications plan for a company must be based on the benefits to its customers, employees, senior management, and stockholders among others. Having excellent benefits available to both inside and outside customers in the 90's is not enough. You must be able to communicate those benefits to your existing and prospective customers. "Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door" is an untruth that some still want to believe. Without professional communications (marketing and advertising) to your existing and prospective customers, there will be less than adequate return on assets, and even smaller profits. In a phrase, excellent to superior benefits offered to your customer base in today's world is only your "ticket" into the stadium; it does not assure you of winning the game. The answer to winning is an individualized, professional communications and marketing plan that promotes your company's benefits and your company's personality.

The amazing part of the scenario is that this professional communications and marketing plan is not only inexpensive, but is indeed the road to higher profits. The capstone of this communications plan is that it must be implemented and "blessed" by senior management. In other words, senior management must "own" the plan. In addition, the plan must be flexible enough to move with local and regional market fluctuations. Thirdly, the plan must consistently be presented in an appealing fashion to people (outside customers) who have a need for the services and products offered by your company.

Professional, individualized communication (as described above) is the key that opens the enhanced profit door, today and past the year 2000. There is no other way. For verification, ask the senior management at Apple Computer.

Lastly, this professional communications plan, properly formed and implemented, adequately funded, and consistently utilized, will enhance your company's profit, and believe it or not, will reduce negative stress for your senior management, your staff employees, and your company's customers!

Ralph Waldo Emerson was correct when he said, "Your actions speak so loudly, I can't hear a word you are saying." Masengill is right when he says, "The proof and the profit are in the doing."
