Trust is also essential to getting true value in an advertising relationship. "An agency must have complete and pertinent information about the company's products, profit goals, competition, etc. in order to perform properly," says Robin Keith, president and CEO of Masengill Marketing Associates in Morristown, TN. "The company must be sure that sensitive and confidential information can be trusted in the hands of the agency. Once this trust is established, the flow of information can be free."

"Successful marketing requires an adequate financial investment," says Keith. "A company cannot expect the results they are looking for without making the investment it requires. When companies are willing to do these things, the possibilities for success are greatly enhanced."

Doubt it? Ask the people at Apple Computer. We have the privilege of telling the people of America, and the South specifically, about how our clients' products and services can best satisfy their customers' needs. Masengill Top Total Quality Agency In U.S.

Reprinted from The Knoxville News Sentinel

Masengill Marketing Associates was recently judged the top Total Quality in Advertising (TQA) marketing and advertising agency in America. The agency will be used as a national model.

Over 1,000 agencies in the U.S. were observed before the top agency was found. The agency has been practicing the Dr. Edwards Deming Method of Quality Management for over two years.

In its roll as national quality model on the 27th and 28th of this month, agencies from none Eastern states are flying into East Tennessee to interview and observe the Masengill staff and senior management team.

Stuart Sanders, president and CEO of the company that did the interviews, The Sanders Consulting group of Richmond, Va., and London, England, said, "This has been a three year project. We have looked at over 1,000 marketing and advertising agencies and Masengill is the winner hands down. I must say we were surprised to find the number one quality agency located outside one of the major 100 metro markets. What has happened here in Morristown is truly remarkable, and we salute Ralph and his team of quality professionals. The fact the agency has agreed to share their quality knowledge with the rest of the advertising industry says much about the character of this agency's management and staff."

Masengill won based on overall marketing and advertising creativity, professional attitude of the staff, profitability, client retention, quality of production (print and video), ease of management style, and other quality attributes.

Agency president Ralph Masengill Jr. said, "Many great things have happened to this agency team. But this has got to top the list. To be judged the number one agency in the United States is more than we ever expected. It is a humbling experience to have your peers from all over the nation seek you out as the nation's quality model."

Masengill Marketing Associates is a full-service communication group offering print, television, radio, outdoor, and full marketing services to its clients.

Established in 1979, it is a member of numerous national and regional groups as well as five national database research and development networks. The agency has 12 associate offices throughout the United States and Canada. The Morristown-based agency has won over 150 national and regional awards for marketing and advertising excellence.

Quality At Work

Reprinted from The Business Journal, East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia's Business Magazine

One service-oriented firm doing business in the region has recently received national attention for its quality management efforts. Masengill Marketing Associates in Morristown, Tenn., was judged the No. 1 Total Quality in Advertising (TQA) agency in America by the Sanders Consulting Group, internationally known advisors to the advertising industry.

As a result, the agency has been selected to serve as a national quality model, which includes hosting representatives from other agencies who are coming to Morristown to observe the quality management in action.

Ralph Masengill Jr., the agency's president, explains that the TQA award was based on observations of 1,000 marketing and advertising firms over a period of three years.

"Many great things have happened to our agency team," he says, "But this has got to top the list. It's a humbling experience to have your peers from all over the nation seek you out and use you as a national model for quality."

As a proponent of Deming's methods, Masengill speaks of his firm's experience with near-evangelistic zeal.

His "conversion" began when he was exposed to the Deming philosophy at a seminar in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Upon returning home, further study convinced him that a quality management system could reverse what had become a stagnant, no-growth situation for his firm. Then, to become better prepared to introduce that system, he participated in a Quality First management course at Walters State Community College. "We begun to implement Deming with weekly, half-day quality meetings which became both study sessions and a vehicle for gaining employee participation in redesigning our policies and procedures, "Masengill explains.

"That was over two years ago, and since then the entire organization has participated in revamping every aspect of the business. That's involved developing new systems and methods from scratch, all of which are written down in great detail--so much so that some took as long as six months to prepare."

Masengill suggests beginning a quality-management system by addressing small projects first so that participants can become comfortable with the methodology and enjoy early success.

"For example," he recalls, "one small adjustment we came up with reduced fax calls."

While Masengill Marketing Associates often addresses processes through its quality management system, Masengill stresses that the system "isn't based on mechanical things."

"People are often misled into thinking Deming is about systems and methods," he says, "so they want to get right into mechanical things that eliminate the thinking process. But Deming is really about communications. It (Deming's method) forces individuals to think and face the truth--most of which is positive."

Masengill admits that the system he champions called for "a major adjustment on my part" including becoming an administrator instead of a boss. In addition, some members of his organization took up to a year to overcome their skepticism.

"You have to give the system time," Masengill stresses. "People can't change quickly because they view change as a loss, and they won't accept it until the pain of not changing is the worst alternative."

He also emphasizes the need for top management to buy into quality management "150%" because "like gravity, it only flows from the top down."

Furthermore, he says that sending "underlings" to attend quality related training programs will accomplish little. "Management is trained to blame someone else," he adds. "So the system must start at the top."

A complete sharing of information, including that which management has traditionally kept to itself, is also required, says Masengill. Otherwise, effective bottoms-up problem-solving, goal-setting and the measurement of results is impossible.

In addition to sharing information, Masengill also instituted a new profit sharing plan which encourages the staff's feeling of ownership in the organization. The plan is funded with one-third of the firm's net profit with distribution bases on individual performance.

Yet, some of the most effective incentives at Masengill Marketing Associates aren't monetary.

"Everyone isn't motivated by the same stimuli," Masengill says. "It's important to make certain people are in the right slot and can gain gratification, self esteem and relate to the team in a positive way.

"That means you have to value people for what they have inside. We're not interested in developing 'yes' people."

Masengill attributes his firm's growth in annual capitalized billings, which have increased from $2 million to $6 million in the past three years, to quality management and philosophy that "only the client can define quality."

He also credits Deming's methods with creating an improved quality of work life that extends to significant reductions in work-related stress.

In the normally highly changed environment of an advertising agency, that's no small accomplishment.
